2) I wonder why they chose that layout over, say, a cab over, Unimog-esque style to maximize usable space? Usually the concerns with a cab over is crash protection, which doesn’t seem to be a concern here.

I’m no expert on rental car companies...but how are they not good at it? Do you have some insight into their fleet management, storage and servicing that I may be missing?
Rental car companies know how to manage, service and store fleets of vehicles. That is what they bring to the table.
I know that car! My buddy owned it in Atlanta for a couple years and still regrets selling it. It’s now listed for double what he sold it for. Oops!

Why? $30K is relatively nothing for those of the overlanding persuasion. The ability to carry an additional vehicle under cover (ahem, Miata) and live in a weird bit of comfort...sign me up!
