So you would have intercourse with Tiger Wodds too?
This comment is physically painful to me.
I have never read anything on any of the Gawker Media sites that I agreed with as much as I agree with this post.
It’s sad the level of vitriol this has accumulated.
It’s more about the preoccupation w the CVS in the face of a much larger problem of institutionalized racism, race relations between the BPD and the communities they are supposed to serve, and a building being considered more important than a human life.
I’m an eternal grey so this may never be seen. I grew up near Greeleyville, SC. My high school played their high school in sports. The area I grew up (encompassing Greeleyville and several other small towns) is poor. And rural south poor is poor like nowhere else. Schools are poorly funded. There are no jobs. There is…
I’m responding to myself rather than the person in the greys who thinks they’re probably being caused by black vandals (for some reason).
Most people don’t care about anything that doesn’t directly affect them or their family. Racism, poverty, really anything that affects only minority of the population doesn’t get people moving.
We care about our dogs more than we do black people. We care about bags of chips being thrown on the ground more than we do black people. We sacrifice human beings at the altar of property first for the audacity of not wanting to be property and then for wanting to be treated as human.
There is an ecumenical fund that is raising money to help the burned churches rebuild, and it appears to be legitimate. Link below.
Whenever there's some sort of anti-Semitic attack in the world or this country, my local JCC immediately posts guards around the facility and lets everyone know it, too. Mounting a similar tactic might not be a bad idea for black churches in the South over the next few months.
Some people seem to be discounting the possibility that the church burnings are hate crimes because they think that would mean there’s some conspiracy to burn black churches. I think you’re right, these churches are probably being burned by individuals who are all motivated by the same hate, but are not working…
I think people are inclined to hide their head in the sand when faced with incidents that are (a) distinct from their day-to-day life and (b) require thought and nuance to discuss. This would explain why white people are not posting much about it: lack of religion in people’s lives AND an inability to present a cogent…
That’s because it’s easier to come up with pithy, racist/classist memes when it’s a convenience store. It’s a little bit harder when 1) it’s a church and 2) can’t be waved off using confirmation bias.
Also, make use of the dismiss button.
Just a horrible situation. Its hard to overstate how important these churches are in many communities and the many different purposes they serve.
