I'm not sure it's even a big deal. As long as there is a checkbox for it, I don't really care. If it becomes a "feature" you cannot turn off, I will not be upgrading to that OS (and consequently probably moving to a new OS).

I work at a hosting company right now. A few months ago we switched the majority of our machines from 4 monitors to 2. What I have found: nothing really changed. You can really only look at a couple of monitors at a time. Two is great because you can swap between two visible objects rapidly, but with more you are…
Context: I tend to be an open source zealot. Complimenting Microsoft comes hard to me. Also, while XP was a fine OS, it never impressed me much, but Windows 7 did. It's the first time I installed an MS OS and genuinely thought I would miss a lot of its design decisions when not using it. (side note: I tend to have a…
Something inside cringes a bit when I say it, but Windows 7 is actually a pretty great OS. Given that they managed to push it out to market at a time when they already had a far lead, its not surprising they are still the largest OS provider in the world.
It may be tacky and over the top, but I can't be anything but happy with someone who hands me a diamond studded anything.
$299 seems a bit pricey, but I do love the idea of only plugging in thunderbolt and power when I set my laptop down. Luckily, I don't need to make a decision, because it will be a while before I have a notebook with thunderbolt...
I did this with a pair of Grado SR60s. I even ran a cable through the headband so I only need one cable coming down. It works great and keeps the cable out of the way.
I feel like this is an inappropriate blanket statement. If the NIH is funding unnecessary experimentation on chimps, they should review funding guidelines and cut back. If they completely stop funding studies on chimps, they risk losing some very valuable research that might require this kind of testing.
Nope, it is a really strange design decision.
You could try out Lubuntu. They have a 64 bit release and it's probably extremely similar.
My impression has always been that there is some vague possibility that interference could occur, and that should be enough to warent taking steps for safety. Of course, not all electronics give out enough interference to cause a problem (I would guess only things that try to communicate wirelessly these days), but…
The US growth is a bit of an anomaly. If you track fertility rates of natural born citizens, they come out slightly negative (neutral is about 2.1 kids per mother). Fertility rates of immigrants come out slightly positive. Add to that the general increase in population from taking in immigrants in general, and the US…
Actually... The internet was initially designed as a magical thing that works automatically. TCP/IP was designed to network a bunch or systems without any particular leader or centralized organization. If the whole world were covered in wireless networks, and all computers retransmitted data for each other, you would…
That's what she said?
I made one of these once. Was great for running around NY with. It is a little bit wide, but not really much; you are already much wider than your bike. It depends on the buckets you find, of course.
I agree with every single point in your response. Spot on.
My dream application for Thunderbolt is having only one thing to plug in when I sit my laptop on the desk. Right now I have USB and external monitor. If I could push that down to a single plug (and gain even more expansion capability in the process) I would be very happy. The Belkin device seems like it would fit my…
I concur! It seems like we are all wasting resources and time showing the user less options. I don't get it. At least I can remove Unity, but if they ruin Windows I am probably stuck with it.
It is almost fall already, are we sure they would manage by the next few months if they are just doing a few select episodes now?
I have been looking forward to this release for a long while. 11.04 Unity just didn't sit well with me. I am hoping they have cleaned it up enough for me to use it in 11.10.
