I love Gerald Durrell. I also like the fact that in My Family and Other Animals, he portrays his brother Lawrence as something of a pompous arse. Quite fitting given the basis of this thread.

So is it fashionable to like On the Road or not?
I lose track. I read it and quite enjoyed it, but would hate it if my opinion proved to be the wrong one. Your thoughts gratefully received.

Thanks Penguin, I work from home (never a good thing for a chronic masturbator)… My wife thought I was working until I scrolled through your selection of masturbation stories and burst out laughing.

Another Flashman film please. Royal Flash didn't quite do it for me.

I agree with all these…
…. particularly the sound mixing on Transformers: Revenge of the fallen, which was absolutely magical.

He looks like
he's a real hit with the ladies. As a ladies man, I should know.

Super Furry Animals
They've consistently been the most interesting, entertaining and musically gifted British band of the past 15 years. They don't take themselves too seriously and continuously knock out tuneful, original pop songs that most bands would kill for. There, I've said it.

To summarize: there has been a lot of eye rolling going on at Avatar screenings.

Banmar, a sport that takes up to five days and pauses for tea breaks (and cucumber sandwiches) isn't lame, it's unfeasibly civilised.

How could Planet Yank not give a shit about watching itself get owned by England 's football team in 3D (or, more realistically, witness the two of them eke out a disappointing 1-1 draw)?

I stand corrected. How disappointing. Ah well, I can finally say I won't be tuning in.

He also makes a point (below), which I think is pretty naive:

Thankfully
over here in the UK, the BBC has stopped importing this show. That was our license fee money they were spending, but no more, thank God.

Without wanting to repeat what I said in an earlier thread, Master and Commander is far from bland. Having read both, I'd say it is equal to Blood Meridian (more subtle, less in your face, and none the worse for it). It is unfairly dismissed because it's part of a historical fiction series, which is a shame.

Shame, you should read Master and Commander. Much better than Then we came to the end, in my humble opinion. Intelligent, beautifully written, and amazingly researched historical fiction, that goes way beyond the genre boundaries. It's a definite classic that will teach you something about the time (so does Ferris's

Hmm… A 2:1 is the equivalent of a B grade at UK universities. So A Grey Man is probably British, in his mid-to-late forties, and uses phrases like hipster douchebag.

You sound like an angry student.

Broadband, DVR and the DVD Box set
The first for making internet porn so much quicker to download, the latter two for completely and utterly altering my TV viewing habits (and without which I would never have been able to enjoy TV's finest decade: Lost, Buffy, The Sopranos, The Wire, Curb, BSG, Deadwood etc).

Dad? Is that you?
