They aren’t orthopedic or anything special, but I like Sam Edelman flats. They’re basic and comfortable, but still cute enough for nicer occasions. Full price they’re around $100, but they always have decent stuff on sale.

I very much dislike my MiL as well. She sounds similar to yours - lacks any real depth or individuality. She also is extremely shallow and constantly talks how much her fancy (yet ugly) things cost.
