If you were to try to push it the other way (as a normal person would try), it starts indicating in the other direction.

How about reading the article? They say they tried it at 68 km/h and they lost control of the car. There is no need to try at 100 km/h if it fails at 68.

But they had to severely reduce the speed to be able to pass it, far below the normal highway speed. That’s why it failed.

There’s a lot more to how well a tire works than just thread depth. Tires dry out and the rubber stops being good at gripping when they get old. I would never put a used set of rubber on any car, unless they were almost new.

The normal way of doing it in Scandinavia is to have a second set of rims for the winter tyres. Nobody here swaps the rubber on the rims twice a year. Swapping to the second set of wheels take 30 minutes with a jack.
