I was actually quite surprised by this episode. They tackled a difficult topic and made it entertaining. It was not what I was expecting, and that is a good thing.

It’s a Kanuten-valve bypass. Likely, the trom-flange failed on the engine at some point and this was used to remedy the problem.

My guess is that he knew exactly what the issue was with his tires, and possibly even purposefully wore them down to the state they were in prior to posting his video.
