Here's my guess as to why Chase doesn't have to pay a percentage: ATMs don't make sales, they dispense cash, hence there is no direct margin. And people with cash in hand are more likely to buy things in Grand Central Station stores. Higher sales for stores mean more profit for the MTA.

Possibly the gene's protein interacts with another protein encoded on chromosome 23. Since men can have certain recessive genes exposed on chromosome 23 that women don't (e.g. color blindness), there could be something going on there.
