Because it’s the size that was the issue, not the shape.  The shapes are standardized but the regulations require the text WITHIN the shape to be a certain minimum size.  There wasn’t room on the interface to scale them all to the size required to meet the regulations so they had to replace the icons with text.

The wheels look better without the covers anyway but I imagine this will only further reduce the already much lower than advertised range
