His use of slow mo shots 100% comes from his time as a music video director where it can be used to great effect because a video is only 3-4 minutes long and it can only have so much slow mo in it. That is not true in a 3 hour movie.

I think the only things he really gets shit about on a personal level is love of the Fountainhead and how he maniuplated his fanbase and then after whipping them into a frenzy, pretending that he had no part in it.

Yeah very much this. The problem, in terms of the movies being profitable (ie not regarding quality), is that budgets have exploded for very little return.

That part kinda checks out, TBH. The old rule of thumb to determine a movies box office run profitability was to double the production budget to cover the advertising.

I think there is also a big difference in goals too.

I’ve been saying for years that he desparately needs a co director. Someone who specializes in getting the movie from setpiece to setpiece, doing the character work, all the stuff he clearly doesnt like to do, and then letting ZS take over to film the action.
