I’ve been wondering if the problems I have with TFA are actually down to it being a better Episode X than Episode VII.

I agree. I feel like they leaned too heavy on a convoluted politics that didn’t end up even making it in the film really.

I think that to me is the biggest problem: it feels like we missed a movie and know significantly less than the characters do. I think they were trying to go for the same “let’s just drop you into the middle of the conflict” that A New Hope had, but the situation in A New Hope is summed up well in the opening crawl
