This. Republicans succeeded at creating a wedge issue with gays in the military early in President Clinton’s presidency. DADT was the result: Clinton was able to carve out that wiggle room. For the time, it was progress, and it helped lead to where we are now.

Clinton was more than debate worthy and it didn’t matter, though. I don’t think this election will be determined by the debates.

The only issue I take with this is that people forget that Don’t Ask Don’t Tell was progressive at the time. It replaced an outright ban on LGBT people in the military (which Republicans were trying to enshrine into federal law). Don’t get me wrong, by 2011 it needed to go, but in 1994 it was bleeding edge progress.…
