Uh, from what I remember of the book and seeing him speak about it, “trouble fitting in” is a drastic understatement for what he and his family went through. He wasn’t able to go outside his house as a child in fear that the police would identify him as mixed race.

There isn’t an actual score for appearance. However, it’s generally considered “in your best interest” to look neat and pulled together.

I dearly love the Shibs and would have been screaming and crying if they won, but I don’t know if I would go so far as to say they got robbed.

He is actually a really nice person. He worked with my former coach for awhile, and he was unfailingly polite to everyone and respectful on the ice (which is more than I can say for many skaters who didn’t have anywhere near his level of success).

As someone who remembers Adam Rippon when he was a kid with curly blond hair, it’s really been a fucking joy to watch his career trajectory over the past few years (injury aside). And pure joy is pretty hard to come by these days, so I am alllllll in for this and am happy that the general public has been introduced to

I agree. I find their programs really beautiful.

Yeahhhhh. I have friends in the skateboard community, and everyone absolutely detests him.

That’s not quite how disagreements work, my dude.

It’s a matter of personal preference, but most figure skaters wear tights that are a little thicker than normal streetwear tights. You want to keep warm and, if the ice is a little rough in places, prevent ice burn and/or snagging if you fall and slide. So her tights are probably fine.

I said that it is not sharp enough to cut your hand in response to the OP, who was clearly concerned about Virtue grabbing her blade during a dance lift. Blades are not so fine that they are going to cut you when you reach back and grab during a dance lift.

Oh, from other skaters? Absolutely.

Yes, that is exactly what I wrote, thank you for recapping!

That was what did me in and made me start crying.

I was a competitive figure skater for 15 years, but thanks for being rude! My 13 year-old self who was at the ice rink at 5:30 AM every day and went to Nationals really appreciates it.

When you’re just grabbing it, as the OP references? No, not typically. I was a competitive figure skater for 15 years, and it was never an issue. There are countless elements that require grabbing and gripping your blade tightly, and unless something truly goes wrong, you don’t cut yourself.

It definitely has an edge, but it is not sharp enough to cut your hand unless you really try.

Yeah, and you also have to think of the many, many young women who had similar experiences, but didn’t have successful modeling careers after.

I’m no Kardashian fan, but honestly what would you prefer her do? She’s been famous since she was a child, so she has always been on this platform.

Hiya - so I saw in another comment that you’re most likely ending up in Western Suffolk, which is where I’m from.

Yep. And there are many, many girls who are picked up from foreign countries and given the golden ticket of the US visa and potential to provide for their families back home, making it all the more heartbreaking that they believe that they must do anything.
