I meant to ask why the shudder for Phil Donahue? He was incredibly progressive for his time and brought on all kinds of people and treated them with empathy and compassion, not like circus freaks. He did outstanding work humanzing and demystifying AIDS, and was (is, I’m sure, he’s still alive) an ardent champion of

So you’re in favor of open borders? Everyone welcome? That would be interesting. Back in the days you’re talking about, the population was much smaller, the economy was expanding, etc. Now, not so much. People need the structure now or the natural flow of people would result in social Darwinism. Plenty of opportunity

then stop hiring them - better yet, make it a crime to do so and start handing out jail/prison terms.

I know I’m supposed to just swallow the party line on this to be considered a “good” liberal, but I honestly cannot get my head around this idea that we should allow unlimited immigration. There isn’t a first world country anywhere that allows immigration without limitations, and for good reason.

The US has been instrumental in creating plenty of fuck ups. If Central Americans get amnesty on grounds that the US screwed up their country, so do Eastern Europeans, middle Easterners, central Asians, etc.

It is horrible for them. But we need to have people working on better solutions. We can’t absorb everyone from war torn and poor nations into a few more prosperous nations. Talking about building walls and deporting refugees seems inadequate. Is there a think tank or something for this? Or do we just say you all die?

Government-funded legal services organizations are barred from doing immigration work as part of their funding. These orgs are already overburdened and underfunded and are unable to even help citizens in need. I’m not sure where funding would come for all these immigration attorneys.

“Treating their illegal immigration as a crime deserving of detention and deportation doesn’t make me feel better.”

It’s not “thousands” to file immigration applications; asylum applications are free, for example, and there are fee waivers for qualifying immigrants under the VAWA program/I-485 green card program/N-400.

The US ends up deporting a huge number of the undocumented immigrants. Obama has deported a record number of undocumented immigrants. Under his presidency he deported more than any other Presidents.

Their crime is existing here, not existing where they originally came from.

It’s not just about labels, there was a point when most of a store’s stock would be antibacterial. It became the norm rather than the exception.

There was a while where it was hard to find ANY liquid soap to buy that wasn’t antibacterial. It’s better now, but it’s still sometimes only in fine print.

I don’t get why people worry about black swan events and then drive around worrying about it.

Meh.

Cinemark’s “victory” will ensure that there will be NO assistance for the next victims of any movie theater shooting in the US, whether the theater was negligent or not.

Along with what the others said, these four could have avoided the costs by dropping the suit. That’s why it is only four people being asked to pay instead of the dozens who sued. Everyone else dropped the suit when they realized the settlement would be rejected and they’d get stuck with the bill. These four either

It’s not like theater shootings are happening around the clock. I mean, if you don’t take your kids to a movie theater because there might be a shooting, shouldn’t you never take them on a road trip because highway accidents happen? Never let them ride a bike because they might get hit by a car or fall and break a

Won’t bother me or (I’m guessing) the majority of cinema-goers.

State court, state laws. I’m guessing Colorado got itself some “tort reform.” This is exactly what trial lawyers told them would happen, but everyone loves to hate trial lawyers, even though they are right about almost every issue.
