The Jeep wave might be a lie, but the Cruiser Salute is very real. When I bought my BJ42 at 17, the guy selling it made sure to educate me about how to do it. He even made me drive up and practice. Still salute every cruiser I see and get about 80% recovery.

I was wondering about this issue as my 400hp chipped 7.3 struggled to pull a 10,000lb trailer. I think the 35" mud tires might be reducing my ability to put power on the road. No problems without weight, but add that trailer and holy Dina, you gotta plan your hills a mile in advance!
