The “spinoffs” are unfortunately 100% critical to the plot, anyone that jumped from 2 right into 3 would have absolutely no idea what is happening throughout the entire game. The largest plot points and the majority of the ending plot threads come from the mobile free to play prequel MMO.

KH3 is the tenth game. The previous entry, which directly leads into 3, came out in 2013. Full production of KH3 only began once FFXV was getting ready to wrap up.
