I think most any representation of the alien would have disappointed us in some way. The novel and the movie give a credible explanation for “why” it looks like her father...

It would not serve the theme of the movie for her to return with evidence.
The theme proposes that, “yes, sometimes, you will have experiences that no one else can share, that has no evidence outside your own sensorium.” Like people’s experience of Faith.

Arrival? It’s not quite fair to say that it outright butchers one of the best SF/F short stories in a while - the heart of the story is still there, and there are certainly many worse treatments of someone’s writing - but where I felt it ran into real problems was the new material, which in many cases felt bolted on.…

I need no external boosting to re-watch Contact. I’ve seen it ten times or more. I’ve shared it with my boys (10 & 12).
I accept that there’s a “simple message” about Science and Religion (or, Faith versus Reason), but it’s not simplistic.

I think Marvel retained rights to that version of the DWs, so IDW (hey!) had to come up with something different...
I checked out of the new series after about 6 issues, though. It was dull, IMHO.
That said, I’d love to have one of the new ROM figures (above)!
