I thought DG Motorsports made the hard tops for the MX-5 Global Cup, and that they look like this:

It seems they’re mostly exploiting bugs in the physics engine and environment geometry. One of those is, as you said, rotating backwards to produce lift. Another seems to be hitting corners, edges, and other features in a way that makes them act as ramps.
