As I understand it, the impeachment provisions in Virginia’s constitution are centered around incapacitation.

This is America. It’s both racist and, relative to other first world countries, also still in possession of a fairly high crime rate. Some folks might respond to that with the typical point that crime rates have been going down for decades, but that doesn’t mean there still isn’t crime.
But in a more specific sense, if she was trying to make that broader point (a point I agree with), she sure failed miserably at it.
Trail of Tears jokes. Yikes.
It’s been like, 6-7 years at this point I think, but unfortunately the first thing I think of when this particular reference to Native American history comes up is the “Mail of Tears”.
You’re missing my point. The paradigm assumed by your statement is that the GOP comprises a large enough group where the backlash could endanger the legislation. What I’m suggesting is that you need to get broad support for big legislation. That either means getting some factions within the GOP on board with them or…
This isn’t a negotiating position though. Having a negotiating position requires that you outline how you are going to do something, because “How” is typically more hotly negotiated than the outcome.
Agreed. Strom Thurmond was a racist shitbag, but at least he was willing to literally stand in front of the entire nation for 24 hours and defend his racist convictions for all to see. Now it’s all just procedurally done and it gets lost in the rapidity of the news cycle who exactly it was that decided to deny a…
Even if there is a “50/50" split, that split is likely to cross party lines.
As a procedural move, I don’t really care what happens to the filibuster.
I know it’s embarrassing for you to admit that your Patron Saint might in fact not be the unicorn you’ve made her out to be, but the simple fact is this proposal is no more substantial than a beauty pageant contestant calling for world peace.
Oh don’t be a disingenuous little shit..
The only proper way to organize books is in a pile in a properly dug out firepit!
Yes, I am making that comparison. That’s how empty this resolution is.
I didn’t compare them directly. What I was asking for is something in between a bunch of talking points and a fully baked law. A resolution to do something sweeping that doesn’t speak in any way, shape or form as to how it could plausibly be accomplished is no different than a beauty pageant contestant wishing for…
I tend to agree, but then again, the backlash has all the hallmarks of the sort of resistance that could harden into a bloc that makes it politically destructive to stand by the deal. Any sort of concerted PR effort could just as easily hurt them as hinder them if it’s bungled.
I mean, bluntly, I think Ocasio-Cortez’s experience has very much informed how she wrote this proposal. She was raised in the age of the internet, won her primary on the strength of her social media game, and has continued to be bolstered by people who view any sort of practical consideration as just being a cloaked…
Oh fuck off. I’ve definitely had to figure out how to solve problems I didn’t know how to solve when I started trying to solve them. And until I had some notion of how to solve them, I didn’t start making a plan for how to solve them and I sure as fuck didn’t stupidly assert that I would solve them within a given…
I wasn’t really looking for specific, concrete proposals either.
Because unless you provide at least some sort of plausible idea worth exploring for how to do something this sweeping, people can, AND SHOULD, see this as being no different than when a pageant contestant says they’d like to see world peace.
