Religion gives people the ability to choose to do bad things, like torturing and killing people, with the backing of their religion. Without the religion, they lose justification, and are more likely to face consequences for their behavior. These institutions are perfect havens for abusers.

They also use the two witness rule as an excuse not to report, i.e., you have to have two witnesses to a crime. And then when there are two witnesses, they’ll twist it around again and avoid reporting or doing anything.

All patriarchal religions, really, any religion that differentiates between the genders, are breeding grounds for abuse.

I understand your viewpoint, however, the author of this piece has had extensive, apparently worldwide investigation into exorcisms as practiced by multiple sects. That they have arrived at the conclusion that much of exorcism is gender based, especially in patriarchal groups, is extremely important.
