I was in school. Credit cards were paid off using student loans, scholarships and/or parental contributions. I never went into debt, I was just using a credit card instead of cash or a debit card.

Having a credit card doesn’t automatically mean incurring debt. Pay it off every month, and you will establish good credit (lower interest rates for car and home loans) and get rewards (free money).

If you have literally no credit, see if someone will add you as a secondary account. I initially established pretty decent credit as a teen by being listed on my parents’ AmEx account. I’d charge my gas and fast food, then pay it off every month. By the time I was in college, I could qualify for halfway decent credit
