They actually did do that story. It was a video game from the early 2000's I think. The ending scene is a Skynet factory being taken over by the resistance and a terminator is sent back. Connor and his team take a couple seconds to figure out what the hell Skynet just did and he then sends Kyle to stop it.

I assume Maggie feels somewhat responsible for Rick’s “death” since he was reacting to her plan to kill Negan. If he wasn’t on his way back to Alexandria to stop her, things might have turned out differently.

I think Maggie ultimately left because she didn’t like the fact that Negan was left alive, even if imprisoned forever. And that led to her and Daryl planning to kill him themselves which led to Rick getting isolated, injured and “killed”.
