I actually don't think it's odd! It works because Max is incredibly cynical and realistic while Alex is naive and airy. At the same time, they share a lot of the same qualities: laziness, goofy humor, insanity…

This is true, but the way he talked about it was off the wall. He talked to her as if she were diseased, instead of someone actively struggling with a serious mental illness. It's fine to discuss those issues, but you don't attack the person, which is what I felt he was doing.

The swim coach delivered the only line that actually made me laugh this episode. Although I did give props to Sam for asking about "Trouty Mouth".
