It will take people with sense (like you) to change things but trust me: I am 46 and alcoholism is at least discussed and treated in a much better way now. People are much more sympathetic-in general-to addicts because the medical profession has learned much about addiction.

A good friend of mine just died of cirrhosis at 46. He hid his drinking for years and was able to function fairly well. He was found unconscious in his apartment, taken to ICU and languished for five days until his body gave out.

I think he still is a decent guy. If you read the original article, it doesn't sound that bad. Everything I've ever heard or read (and I saw him in concert a few weeks ago) about him is that he is down-to-earth and very normal. I think the article overstated what happened. At least I hope.
