Right after the Oscars, a few people got pushback for saying some variation of “this is how Weinstein happened,” but...it is truly rich watching an industry that spent the last 7 years patting itself on the back for its supposed progress in not condoning bad behavior circle the wagons around Will Smith like this.

Seeing this makes me, in an odd way, respect Nicole Holofcener more. Because she’s the only director I can think of who has been able to elicit genuine warmth from Julia Louis-Dreyfus, who can do a lot of things well, but warmth is rarely one of them. Including Tuesday.

The AVClub Is Still Writing About Jerry Seinfeld Still Talking, Even Though Pop-Tarts Movie Came Out Like a Month Ago.

I absolutely agree that a relatively small corner of the internet gets outsized attention because a lot of people with platforms live in it. Unfortunately, these things can mushroom into real-life consequences, often undeserved, and it doesn’t have to take a critical mass of people.

Agreed. Good thing that’s not what I’m describing.

Exactly. They were the “it’s not McCarthyism, it’s consequences culture” side until people they agreed with—most recently, people who criticized Israel—started facing said consequences. All of a sudden, they’re the ones crying McCarthyism. In spite of myself, I find the lack of self-awareness pretty funny.

I’ll happily defer to people who have watched more of him after coming back to the show, but hopefully he’s more willing than I thought to call out both sides when they do something worth criticizing.

What Stewart seems to be overlooking, maybe intentionally, is that cancel culture is often a set of norms enforced by a particular community, with violators chiefly punished by that community. So yes, many Republicans are clearly afraid to cross Trump because they operate in ecosystems that mostly consist of

Fair enough, if that’s your opinion. I guess it must be enough people’s to justify them holding the job longer than anyone else.

I do, and don’t remember this. Watching it again...I thought it was fine. But if that’s the best--I know you said you don’t watch them all, but I don’t remember anything better.

She has a nice singing voice. Not sure what else the case for her has.

I’d probably agree, but that’s sort of by default, honestly. Nothing against him, but if the reliable utility player is your MVP, then it’s probably not the best cast.

All due respect, I don’t know that Jake Gyllenhaal is at the level of “guy worth inviting to host even if they’re not really promoting anything.” Not bad, but not blowing people away, at least in my opinion.

What about “general Hispanic immigrant character who speaks very quickly”? He did that one 10-15 times.

MoviePass currently exists again, and has for over a year, using a system where a given film costs you a certain number of your allotted credits based on showtime/popularity. Not sure if an entertainment journalist should know that, or if “Matt Schimkowitz” is an AI nickname.

I feel like God would be taller. Six-one at least.

Were you one of the staffers praising Smith for slapping Chris Rock? Or was that every other writer on the AVClub?

Never said any of that. But I can’t say I heard a lot of nuance in the narrative of the Macklemore song, or anyone in places like this calling for him to do a verse on Israel’s right to exist, defend itself, the rise in antisemitism, etc. Nuance is great when it adds more weight to side someone already supports, often

Worth a shot.

A ceasefire wouldn’t affect the West Bank. But I think you probably thought of that after you found a fun fact to throw out.
