Please. She knew the camera would be on her, and there’s a difference between giving a “good sport” reaction (Greta Gerwig) and starting at someone stone-faced when someone makes an extremely mild joke that is not even really on you.

I’m pretty suspicious of anyone whose takeaway from that Taylor Swift *joke* (that wasn’t even about her, really) isn’t “Taylor Swift seems fairly humorless about herself, and could stand to lighten up a little.” What would she have done if Ricky Gervais had been host, slit her wrists on camera?

I would guess that the vast majority of the audience thought it was a real person, and so thought she was genuinely breaking, giving them a release valve that playing it straight wouldn’t have.

If the woman playing the black activist was an actress, why couldn’t she have played it with a straight face? Would have been funnier; you’d forgive breaking if it was a real person, but apparently she wasn’t.

People shouldn’t apologize if they aren’t sorry. And the best way to “de-platform” a comic you don’t like is to not give them attention. It seems like a lot of people either like his comedy or failed to ignore it.
