If you’re sliding something flat into the bed why have the step and handle unfolded? The step is for getting into the bed. When loading drywall or plywood I don’t need to get into the bed.

Yes, it is certainly a thing. Especially with older trucks where you can walk up, undo the hooks on the drop down cables without tools, and just lift up one end of the tailgate and it slides right out.

I think the actual coverage is the same. However, the prices have gone up. I believe there are even cars that you can no longer get the super long coverage on; Range Rover is one of those.
