Not all critics are ignorant dumbasses, but I feel ya. And after coming across many of them fawning over bands with an alleged fresh, new sound in the '00s, as if Wire or early XTC had never existed, I was quite disappointed in the lot of 'em.

- So, the Pixies backlash is in full swing, eh? Lame.
It's certainly the Foos' best in a while.

The third album is pretty good. After that, tread carefully.

I'd say a better comparison is that Foo Fighters are this generation's Wings.

- They made their previous album in Grohl's garage; it sounds like it was made at The Power Station or Electric Lady. What was the point? Strike one.
- They travel to eight cities and the songs they write/record there sound like your typical FF fare. Again, what was the point? Strike two.

That Bono cover is quite weak…reminds me of when I first heard Cohen's "Everybody Knows", by then having enjoyed Concrete Blonde's version for a few years.
Every time I go back to hear the original version of a Leonard Cohen song, be it "Hallelujah" or "Everybody Knows", my reaction is quite similar to yours.
According to Dave Grohl, the Foos were subbing for Korn, who cancelled.
