The problem with a denim skirt that is longer than your knees is that even if you wear just a bra with it, I’m going to automatically think “oh is she one of *those* Christians?”

I looked it up, and yes, it seems she “only” did about 250 shows over a four-year-period. I still maintain that if you can do that kind of work — live performance is not exactly an office job; you need that time off — you can decide whether you want to ditch the IUD.

The standard medical advice if one suffers from bipolar disorder is to reduce stress as part of a long term management plan. If her conservator was meant to help her manage her illness then they were doing a piss poor job of it by working her to the bone. It would be like feeding candy bars to someone with diabetes. Ke

“The control he had to hurt his own daughter, he loved it. I worked seven days a week ... it was like sex trafficking. I didn’t have a credit card, cash or my passport.”

This conservatorship is an absolute disgrace. Britney Spears has certainly displayed very concerning behavior before, she has well-documented mental health issues, and I have no doubt she would struggle, maybe mightily, to handle her own affairs. And, so what? That last sentence describes lots of people, including

My lizard brain rejected your classification of “roll up” and tried to call these “cold midwest enchiladas.”

Lazy skincare FTW.

High end, expensive skin care is seriously overrated.

What often gets glossed over is that her experience is a very Irish one. We’re a similar age and our upbringings were full of the same cloying religiosity and stark hypocrisy that passed for “normal” back then.

And I will always, ALWAYS have such respect for Kris Kristofferson for supporting and comforting her after she was booed at the Dylan tribute.

I’m That Person at parties and happy hours because I point out that it was Sinead O’Connor who publicly called out the Catholic Church for sex abuse long before the Boston Globe ever did. The following year, a real estate developer found mass graves from the Magdalene laundries.

I was an insecure, attention-seeking troll

I’ll never forget how the actress playing Megan was savaged online during the show’s run. I thought she did a great job playing a young woman negotiating a crazed dreamscape trying to figure out what she was supposed to be doing.

And in many cases they still are functional options. Spanx and whatnot are sad, sausage casing attempts to modernize foundation garments.

I don’t remember anyone lionizing Don Draper.

I love that show and have watched it through about three times. Her character’s treatment by the men around her was one of the focal points of the show; not in a garish way or one that glamorizes lasciviousness, but her sexualization by those around her (and the ways that she sometimes uses it as a tool) is presented

I just think people should be prepared to pay more for a better product.

Let’s say they buy 100 pounds of brisket at $4.75/lb – that’s $475. After trimming those 100lbs, they lose 40% so now we’re at 60lbs of brisket. After cooking they lose another 20-30% (let’s call it 25%), so now we’re at 45lbs of sellable brisket. In order to recoup that $475 (forget profit) they need to charge

It would not kill American consumers to get smaller portions for their money.

Emily, I am so sorry about what happened in graduate school. I was literally shaking with rage when I read about what happened when your short story won the prize from the visiting author. This was an excellent essay. Thanks for sharing it.
