@kid1000002000: Not only is this distraction free, but it is much more powerful than Office and acts as a typesetter to create beautiful looking documents. LaTeX is widely used by the publishing community, and best of all, its open source!

@hoozer1: actually, I know of many professors themselves who prefer to use linux in their various research fields. and excel in general is limited at best. sure, its nice for a lower level analytical chem class, but a lot of advanced software (like chimera) is available on multi platforms.

im not sure this is a good lifehacker story...
i think we have a lurking variable- everyone's used mint but hasnt checked the other ones out yet...
mint is owned by the same company as quicken. its pretty dang safe, if not, half the nation would have gone under. plus, its "read only" by design. even if a hacker did get access, they wouldn't be able to do anything more than what happens if they go through your trash.
