Meh. Kids shouldn't be forced to pledge allegiance to their own country. That's stupid.

The North did not 'invade' the South. It was the other way around.
Your ignorance is amazing. How about you go study some history before you go on the Internet and lecture people, OK?
My gg-grandfather was an illiterate 'mulatto' who was forced into the Confederate army, lied his way out, picked up his family and moved them to Kentucky, abandoning their home and most of their possessions, to then join the Union Army and fight for the Union.
Yeah, I'll see some of my fellow Boomers bitching about The Pledge on FB, and I'll point out that they only made us say it because they thought it would keep us from becoming Communists.
And after you've done all that, studied the history and the nuances, it's still gonna come down to, 'Union good, Confederacy bad', because the South started a WAR in order to keep millions of innocent people in bondage.
Indeed.
My gg-grandfather's company (13th TN Calvary, Co K) was largely made up of soldiers who had deserted from the Confederate army.
You don't HAVE to fight because you're conscripted (the Union had a draft, the Confederacy had conscription). There's always another choice.
One of the interesting tidbits I found while researching my own family history was that Quantrill was taken out by my gg-grandfather's brother.
There were tens of thousands of Southerners who fought for the Union, risking not only their own lives, but their family's as well.
Lexington is only moving the monuments, not taking them down.
The US had instituted a draft more than a year before Pearl Harbor and Hollywood was already churning out 'It's great to be a soldier!' propaganda films (Abbot and Costello's 'Buck Privates', for example).
When WWWIII starts, we're working for the Underground, right?
Yeah, definitely prefer the perp walk scenario. He needs to fall hard, not be a martyr to the alt-right.
I don't, because I truly believe you can't accomplish good by doing evil, but I have wondered if any of those people who would, if we had time travel, go back and kill Hitler would do the same for Trump.
Which we could un-enact with the next Democratic POTUS.
The federal government melted down most statues on federal land during WWII, including statues to black Union soldiers that have never been replaced. So we're left with all the traitor statues on state lands.
This is one of those times when I really wish I was a lesbian.
Glad to be of service.
