I'm surprised people seem so surprised by this.

You're not giving previous iterations due credit. I think modern feminism (as well as modern American liberalism in general) does a shitty job of recognizing the extent to which white supremacy still infects our culture (speaking specifically about my own country, not suggesting it's only a US problem) and a lot of

For a mentally ill person who wasn't proven guilty. I also love how they touted avoiding prison as a "choice." As if it's not coercion.

Native American women were often sterilized without their consent for a disturbingly long time. Many NA women were afraid to go to the doctor because of that shit.

yep. Yknow what else woul make her life better? Competent mental health care and accessible and affordable birth control on her own terms.

This is horrifying on so many levels. Do people also understand that after you do this, it's not like women aren't effected other than the (admittedly horrific and so not okay) side effect of being sterile against their will. They have just thrown a woman into forced early menopause. Her life is different forever. Her

I had two reactions to this.

I'm too lazy to go and research this, but if memory serves isn't chemical castration often part of plea deals for pedophiles? And a seem to remember a recent case where a guy who had, like, 19 kids by a bunch a different women was offered a plea deal where he had to get a vasectomy to avoid jail for non-payment of

An extended prison sentence is most definitely a threat.

Most of those in support of it are not regular commenters, they're trolls brought out of the grey by approved commenters replying to them. But yeah, you're being fair in your statement.

Fine, call it a "hernia" then. Or "an obstruction", or a "benign cyst". Whatever BS excuse they use is not really the point here

Having had a Cesarian, I definitely agree that it's basically impossible to make an informed decision while undergoing that procedure (which is why it's so important to have an advocate present). That is so young to be given a tubal! It would be one thing if she wanted one, but I agree - it definitely sounds more

Yeah, it's not common, but the combination of older women who had this happen to them years ago still being in the healthcare system now plus a few communities or situations in which a provider regularly oversteps their authority means it's still common enough.

No, I have never met a man who was sterilized for any reason other than his own personal preference.

Have you ever heard of a man being sterlized under similar circumstances? (Btw, just so we're clear, I think this practise is heinous and indefensible)

It says that she was charged with neglect after the baby died mysteriously. I think if she murdered the baby out right they would say exactly what she did.

As a healthcare provider serving in Virginia, this is no surprise to me. I have never seen a "legal" forced sterilization but I've seen some "Mississippi appendectomies" where a patient was essentially given a sterilization without her informed consent. Every single patient with this story has been a woman of color.
