If you've ever seen cars from that era in person, you realize how flimsy and unsafe they feel. Wobbly fiberglass, thin aluminum, huge fat tires. It's downright scary to think that these guys were racing at nearly 200 mph inside those bathtubs of death.

This chrome strip is pretty random, much like the ones in current Mercedes-Benz cars. Cheap way to add length and dynamism to a thick car.
