In some ways I’m a little surprised it took Marvel this long to retcon this. I mean.. if you look back when there were what 4-5 Spidey titles (i.e, ASM, PP:SM, SSM, USM, etc), after each arc the status quo would return with a quick round of “I quit being Spider-Man!” and “K I’m spidey again”.
I don’t disagree with what you’re saying. What I think though is that people are now using legitimate offenses (i.e., the symbolism from Imperial Japan, The Confederate states, a swastika, etc) as a springboard to censor things like an actor appearing on a poster.
