I've never seen this myself, but I've also heard there are machines with scanners (i.e., facial recognition software) that combines with the ID scanner to determine accuracy of age... though that story seems awfully ambitious for a vending machine...

From my understanding, xbox 360s all had this little window to check the product ID/serial keys, which stores like Bestbuy use to reference any potential tampering and therefore eliminating the need to open an inspect the box. Do none of the Playstation products or even XB1 have this "feature"?
