But who is being treated poorly here? Look, I am recognizing the fact that I’m looking at this entirely as a westerner, so I don’t have the context that someone born and raised in Japan would have. And I acknowledge that.
However, I’m also taking in consideration of what kind of movie Kate is which is a stylish action… Read more
But there actually are plenty of films that do show a more nuance look at Japan. I mean, you can probably google them yourself. If Japan doesn’t have what you want, then there are plenty of independent filmmakers who do so as well.
The problem here is expecting something on the level of Kate to somehow provide that… Read more
But what stereotypes are we even really talking about here? This isn’t the issue in something like Cyberpunk in which all Japanese are either subservient or honorbound of “talka lika deeees.” Most of the Japanese involved are regular people going about their lives
Don’t get me wrong, I think… Read more
They might be a minority, but they’re not a harmless one. It only takes a few to launch a harassment campaign after all.
Because that’s the fantasy. Much like the Wild West or WW2, part of the reason why these eras are lionized is that they represent a time in which White men can succeed and have access to property and women just by the sheer will of their hard work. I find the hand-wringing around this one so weird. I get the exhaustion over these “Lady John Wick” films that have been pumping out already, but I found Kate to be a fun genre exercise: it is what it is, and while its doing nothing particularly new, it’s anchored by some stunning set pieces and an actress who handles… Read more
I don’t think you’re wrong here. I really liked Kate because it has no shame being exactly what it is: It’s a B-level action film.
Agreed. The hot takes for this one is weird.
But that’s the point. No one—except for you apparently—goes to Wrestling because they want to see people actually fight. If you want that, then go watch UFC. And I’ll be honest, it’s not all that fun to watch.
the performance “is”the point. That’s why people tune into watch it: it’s live-action anime, or a modernized… Read more
Got into Wrestling heavily during the pandemic and yeah, AEW is where its at. I checked out All Out and was absolutely floored by that Luchabros/Young Bucks fight.
I’m actually seeing AEW Grand Slame live (and on my birthday too) so I’m extremely excited about that.
