Overblown nationalism and patriotism is usually reserved for dictatorial regimes (see North Korea, China, etc.), but the USA has been doing it for decades for exactly the same reason they do. It gives you an “other” to target and helps keep people focused on other things than their own situation.

Anthems and national pledges are literal brainwashing tools. No one should take part in any of them.
