They’re sickness masks, aka for sick people. It might stop snot from flying out when coughing, but they won’t stop a virus from coming in. Actual medical masks are more expensive and last 3 hours.

Seriously though, outside of some professions they're pretty useless. Its not like they're gas masks that have filters.

Step 1 : don’t use a useless mask just because you’re shy and don’t like to show your teeth in public.

He should have to pay for the extra crew wages + fuel + restitution for wasted time of everyone on that plane. That’s not a “prank”, it’s deliberately inciting fear along the lines of shouting “fire” in a crowded theater.
