@omicron1: The Nazgul only got their flying steeds after Elrond took them out at the river, with the help of Gandalf making the waves appear to be stampeding horses. However there are 9 total Nazul, Witch King being one of them and the leader.

@normandygahn: Thats why Aragorn attacked the black gate, they diverted the forces from the Mt. Doom to the gate. If they hadn't done that they would have died.

@Giggers: Sauron had already been building his army before the start of The Fellowship of the Ring. As for as projectiles to take out the eagles, they had them, the orc's and goblins had plenty of them.

Nope using the eagles in the first place would have been suicide. Sauron would have seen them coming, the only way to do it was to smuggle it in as it happened in the book.
