The GTI is definitely just that good...but the BMW will get you higher levels of cornering grip and acceleration. Those things seem to be an advantage but are often not for a street car. The GTI is plenty powerful stock for my needs, but there’s always the option to tune it if you so desire.

The Accord is a great car, but as you said it’s still more expensive. The Civic si is only 207 hp and is a closer competitor.

Jetta buyers want a sedan with passenger space. GTI drivers want a smaller car with a hatch to haul some stuff

How much power do you realistically need to have fun on a public road? There's also this thing called fuel economy, some people still care about that sort of thing. This car balances a ton of attributes quite well. It's not meant to be a 0-60 machine or lay down sick burnouts.

The red ring is attrocious. The sedan will look great with better wheels and maybe a slightly lower ride height.

Yup pretty much the same as the GTI in that regard. Just a little bit of spice, but mostly a clean simple design that will age well and doesn't have to shout about what it is.
