I don’t get this reasoning because being able to afford food but not a drink is the result of bad financial planning. If there is indeed such a great need to give back, why not partner with the owner to spend a day for charity, or for the restaurant to sponsor a local sports team/shelter?

Another reason to hate the tipping system. Tips encourage waiters and waitresses to act against the interests of the restaurant. There are other ways to incentivize good service.
