What’s funny is that The Life Aquatic is the one that finally got me to let go of all my reservations about Wes. Sure, Tenenbaums and Rushmore are definitely better scripts with actual plots, but the almost aimless silliness of TLA made the whole universe finally click for me.

I know people like to pick on Anderson’s aesthetic as twee and inauthentic, but I can’t think of another director who can make every single scene so beautifully framed and populated. Seriously, every shot of this trailer is an accomplished composition.

Along with Budapest (my personal favorite), The Royal Tenenbaums and Rushmore are generally considered his best. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. So many reasons: next level storytelling, excellent performances from the whole cast, incredible visuals both in-camera and CGI, a thought provoking premise, and ambiguous ending. I catch something new in it every time I watch.
