Yeah, that’s true with Shaq, but it was kind of a different era back then. With the way teams are scoring and shooting threes in today’s NBA, playing the free throw game too much with a bad shooter will get you left behind. 

ETA: forgot to take this year’s stats into account. He’s career 58% from the line, not 56%. 

I don’t think he’s physically scared of the contact itself. It’s just that he realizes getting to the line to shoot two isn’t really a good thing when you only make free throws at a 56% rate. Him getting to the line isn’t going to be very helpful until he shoots free throws better (and right-handed).

Drafting as well as SEA/OKC did starting with Durant is very much easier said than done. Getting the right picks are that much more important for smaller market teams. We’ll see what Mitch can do without the allure of LA.
