I always want to know: How much did you spend total to win that $2,000? Are you really money ahead in the long run? One big payout may not equal lots of small losing entry fees. It’s a great story, and it makes me want to play. But not if I have to spend that much in losing entries to win it.

Indeed! I have worked with Richard Borg, a fine fellow who is not at all the same person as Richard Berg. Neither of them are cyborgs, as far as I can tell.

Dark Tower, like the old board game Dungeon, was designed for you to take a path around the board to win. Like Dungeon, if you went the other way, you could beat everybody else and win first. Not a paragon of game design there.

I also owned both of those. My copy of CNA was autographed by designer Richard Berg: “Good luck.” That game required players to calculate fuel evaporation in the desert. The design ethos was: “Trucks won the war.”
