The i8 is hot garbage.
That’s a terrible downgrade. The M240i is...not great. No steering feel, cramped pedal box, very little character. I understand and sympathize with your friend regarding the maintenance issues (it’s endemic to most BMWs these days), but the M240i is a huge disappointment of a car to me.
