THIS. So much this.
THIS. So much this.
what more can i do?
Man, I love Gloria Steinem. She kicked ass on Quora AMA-something even though sexist idiots left the worst comments on her answers.
EXACTLY. Seriously if she’s your idea of feminism then I guess you’re not an intersectional feminist which means you could care less about black women, transwomen and the like. In which case, you are not a feminist.
Shonda Rhimes just found her next tv series idea. Changes include heroine having a passionate affair with the kidnapper who’s the jerk with a heart of gold.
sure, don’t. and while you’re at it, feel free to dismiss my reasons for finding your ‘academic curiosity’ in this particular matter offensive. I too am not going to aplogize for no longer being emotionally capable of engaging with someone whose academic curiosity wins over people’s concerns.
Your academic curiousity is the problem. People and their legitimate concerns aren’t supposed to be ‘interesting’, they’re supposed to be distressing. Do you here about the Zika virus and go “hmm, if this was the States we’d be allowing abortions but since it’s Brazil they don’t. Gee I sure find this disparity…
I object to your flippant claim that there’s something interesting about Americans of whatever descent having a problem with cultural appropriation. It’s almost as if they shouldn’t when they have every right to be offended.
Lol, bro. I’m from India. I don’t need a degree in anything to tell you that your claim of South Asians having a problem with cultural appropriation is utter bs. People in India are mostly drooling over the coldplay video with the exception of some people on Twitter who object to the stereotypical poverty display.…
I’m so confused with Hollywood and the movie Industry’s insistence on whitewashing. I mean, come on, “Aloha” and “Pan” bombed spectacularly and while a lot of it had to do with a terrible storyline, it still serves as an indicator that “big stars” (often an excuse to cast white people a la Ridley Scott and his shitty…
Great, but depressing, article. And I can’t with the comments dismissing this phenomenon based on a few of their own or their acquaintances’ experience. So your friend circle is a better sample space then 10,000 people?! FFS this has been well documented with multiple studies to back it up.
The Japanese love it when kimono are worn by non-Japanese people, they find it as a show that their culture is appreciated and admired. Same with a good portion of native Indians where these videos and such are concerned.
I agree with so much of what you say. Do you read Jhumpa Lahiri’s books? I think she really nails the isolation first gen Americans of South Asian heritage feel.
Hey, anytime :)
tbh it isn’t a big deal in India. Like I said in this thread itself people love the “Lean On” video. From what I’ve gathered this is an issue faced by immigrants and especially their kids.
Yeah, no I meant about OP wanting to wear a saree and that we’d be glad to share our culture in that situation.
Agree 100% but at the same as someone who is occasionally forced to wear one by the ~elders~ I find it such a hard garment to carry/keep perfectly draped for anything longer than an hour.
Making that first comment to you was very obnoxious of me so thank you for being gracious.
Oh man, I’m sorry. For some reason I thought you were being sarcastic. Seriously, apologies man. D:
edited to reflect inability to interpret words sometimes. Sorry :/
