But again - family farms are not beholden to corporations. Farmers do not work for corporations. They own their land (or they lease their land from other farmers, or the work for other farmers, as did the guy who farmed our land for years). The cost of seed is only part of a farmer’s overall expenses. If anything they

Oprah is the Oprah of quackery. Look at her track record: Jenny McCarthy, The Secret (I can’t remember who wrote it but that was new age quackery), Dr. Phil, Suzanne Sommers.....Dr. Oz is just one of a long line.

That doesn’t mean Archers-Daniels-Midlane or Monsanto own the farms. My dad used to sell a line of seed called Golden Harvest when I was growing up. (I think they have since been bought out by Monsanto, as has nearly every other small seed company. The fact that there are so few small distributors anymore is a much

I’m sure you think it’s true when you say that many farms are “corporate acting” due to their ties with Monsanto, but I imagine you got this from Food Inc. and their ilk rather than knowing actual farmers. I say this because I know many, many farmers. Most of my relatives in my hometown are farmers. My dad was a

Well, it sounds like you have a blanket objection to GMOs based on your previous post:

The Gates Foundation is a huge proponent of GMOs. They’re not trying to sell anybody anything. They’re trying to feed the world.

Common sense definitely says you shouldn’t use toxic chemicals in agriculture. That’s why I think we should ban the use of dihydrogen oxide in agriculture. It’s toxic and is literally sprayed on crops.

Give me a break. I don’t expect you to read every article everyone links to, but I would expect that before you comment to disagree with someone you at least skim the article to see if your point is even valid, which it wasn’t in this case.

hahahaha

Yep, only American corn can save the world. That’s an appropriate response to the article I posted about genetically modified bananas.

That article was backed by ENSSER. More info on them below. If you don’t feel like reading it, I’ll summarize: they’re not using good science and the vast majority of other scientific groups disagree with their position on GMOs.

I’ll tell you who pushes for them. People who want to find a way to feed the world. People who want to produce more with less resources. Also, the Gates Foundation. And yes, Monsanto. But don’t hold Monsanto against GMOs.

Anti GMO rhetoric should absolutely be lumped in with anti-vaxxers. Both are cases of people ignoring scientific consensus.

My parents didn’t finish college and both went to small state schools. But when it came time for my brother and me to apply to colleges, they were big advocates of big name private schools. Yes, it cost a fortune - mostly in loans and grants, since my parents didn’t come close to having enough for the ridiculous

My dad has just been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. My brother and I started noticing symptoms several months ago and urged our mom to get my dad tested. Throughout the diagnosis process, we’ve discovered that his memory is much worse than we realized, and that my mom has been covering for him and/or in denial of how bad

I had a similar experience when I caught genital warts in college. The doctor absolutely shamed me for it. He used local anesthesia and did a laser removal of the warts, and when I got home, I discovered he had missed one - a big one, on my clitoris. I went back to have that removed a few days later. He told me that

I think many women probably freeze eggs so because it’s cheaper and/or because they don’t have a partner yet. Odds of success are much higher for frozen embryos than for frozen eggs, so there’s actually a pretty good incentive to freeze fertilized embryos.

In their defense, medicine won’t really help if you’re possessed by a demon.

I think much of this is perspective. That’s why it’s an issue for me. I’ve been through fertility treatments and have my twins as the result of IUI. There’s a big gray area in fertility work around ethics and legality. It’s not illegal to implant 4 embryos in the US, but I think most fertility doctors would agree it’s

The “will someone think of the children” arguments are because multiple births almost always result in premature births. Quads are delivered at 29 weeks on average. (40 weeks is full term, anything before 28 weeks is touch and go.) Pretty much all quads need NICU time. Choosing to implant 4 embyros at the age of 65 is
