I use my laptop outside in bright sunlight by turning the brightness all the way off (so the screen looks black) and wearing polarized sunglasses. You have to be sitting at a particular angle to the sun, but when you are, it's just as readible as indoors with backlight. Saves battery, too!

I am currently sitting in the last session at the Grace Hopper Celebration of Women in Computing Science conference this year and would like to applaud this young woman for her stand.
