I don't think it's fair to really be so critical of Ripley going back for the cat. After all, some people will run back into a burning building to save their pets.
Watching the SFX to good music does help, I agree. Very spot on, and I tried hard to like this movie, but I just couldn't.

Even by today's standards, Alien is not really that cheesy. Most of the movie is dark and violent, and it even starts off with a lot of slow buildup of the atmosphere. I would say that a lot of modern horror, whether it's deliberate or not, are cheesier than the first and second Alien movies could ever be.
I've yet to see Cloud Atlas, but I think it's safe to say that TDKR is my favorite from the best list, because even though there's a lot of problems with the movie that become more noticeable over time, there's still so many great moments in it.
That's nice. Just because you didn't enjoy a movie that other people thought was a fun deconstruction of horror doesn't mean it should be universally accepted as a bad film.
I have to say, as disappointed as I was in Prometheus, it was way more interesting than The Hunger Games. I never read the book so I can't really compare the source material, but on its own, it didn't quite capture what I think the tone should have been for this film, given its subject.
