I remember a few years ago an NPR program had a segment on “The Worst Holiday Songs”. The assembler of the list played Dylan singing “Hark! The Herald Angels Sing”. It was pretty bad, and the worst part was that Dylan meant it to be taken seriously.

That’s true. I was referring to the identity of the perpetrators. For example, that waitress produced a restaurant receipt with slurs written on it and claimed a customer wrote them. When I see things like this, I immediately reach for a large grain of salt. So many of these “outrages” turn out to be hoaxes or mistakes. The waitress with the slurs written on restaurant checks? The phony cyber threats in Wyoming? The nooses on teacher’s doorknob? Unless there is a disinterested third party witness…
